50 Years Of Travel For Madeira And Funchal
Madeira is frequently regarded as a vacation destination for fifty-something and retired tourists.
Funchal, being Madeira’s chief city, has long been regarded in similar terms. Certainly, there is a long list of past events that shows how Funchal has sometimes displayed a distinct lack of enthusiasm for new technological advances.
To demonstrate this reticence, one perspective that illustrates Funchal’s opposition to modernisation was it’s, happily now abandoned, desire to keep it’s previous main means of transport.
It was only with the passing of the 1950s that four-wheeled motorised vehicles began to make an impact on the narrow streets that typified Funchal at that time. Before that time, the most popular type of getting about was bullock drawn cart-like structures which lacked wheels. These carriages were hauled along the streets on two, wooden sled runners.
A couple of men, traditionally wearing white straw boaters, walked beside these “carro de bois” carriages. The first man was required to steer the the beasts of burden pulling the cart. The second man used a grease laden rag to lessen the resistance between the wooden runners and the road. Both men had the responsibility of waving the flies away from the oxen and, during the night, the steerer carried a lighted candle to illuminate the way and warn others of their approach.
These carro de bois, as a rule, had white linen drapes that hung from the roof. These could be pulled closed to protect the passengers from the intense sunshine.
Often, in the early 1950s, reports regularly circulated that Funchal’s constrained, winding, often steeply incline, cobblestone roadways would never see the new fangled car. The supposition responsible for this sentiment being that engine driven, wheeled transport was an inferior alternative when set side by side with the well evolved long established carro de bois.
Intransigence, in the end, proved pointless. Just like the rest of the world, Funchal has had to consent to the pressure of the age of the internal combustion engine.
However, it was not until the onset of this century that Madeira fully tackled the problems that it’s volcanic landscape presented to motoring. The local Government finally building the Rapida – a fast motorway connecting all the primary population centres on the south coast.
The Rapida is unlike any other motorway you are likely to drive along. Many tunnels and pillar supported bridges conquer the challenges of Madeira’s mountainous terrain and deep ravines. It is no accident that Madeira possesses more road tunnels per kilometre of motorway than any other region on earth.
If you do not fancy the challenge of Madeira’s roads then you can just as easily visit the different places by taking a Madeira excursion.
