How can I repair a hole in an exterior brick wall?
I had a contractor install a dryer vent for me, and he had to create a 4 inch hole in the exterior brick wall of my condo. Unfortunately, the dryer vent never worked correctly, and I had to remove it. Now I have this hole in the exterior brick wall. Can the damaged bricks be removed and replaced to fix the hole? Who would I hire? Would it be really expensive to fix?
To make it aesthetically pleasing replace the bricks, which I believe you can do yourself quite easily. Procure the brick and mortar you will need, then measure the opening, if you have to cut a brick, just whack it with a brick hammer, the pointed end. Don’t worry if it is a little short, simply put a little more mortar in to compensate for the space. Start from the bottom row, from left to right lay your bricks keeping the mortar joints close to the width of the original brick. Cut your brick as needed and mortar in. Remember to use a striker on the joints before they dry to much. When completed run your striker again over all the joints and take a whisk broom to clean any loose mortar off the bricks. In a few days you can wet the bricks as this will make them bond better and take a stiff brush and a little brick cleaner and clean the exterior brick. You can do this.
