A look at the styles of Victorian architecture
Ornate, charming, mysterious and complex. All these words can be used to describe Victorian architecture. But what a Victorian? You might be surprised that not one but many different styles of Victorian architecture was considered. Almost any house built during or shortly after the reign of Queen Victoria of England (1840-1900) can be regarded as the Victorian era.
With the Industrial Revolution (late 1700 – early , 1800) with as a result of new machinery that allows the mass production and rail transport have improved nationwide, the average person was finally able to get the materials needed for construction of flats and houses more interesting. This availability led to a range of styles that we call the Victorian era. Some of the works most remarkable architectural form "Victoria" Queen Anne, Second Empire, Italian, and Stick Eastlake.
Queen Anne
One of the styles Victoria popular in southern and western U.S. is the Queen Anne. Envelope is characterized by large porches, balconies and fireplaces, round-structures "tower", and large windows, these homes are what most of us visualize when we think of Victorian architecture. This gingerbread-style house is also known for its unique floor plans consisting of two or more floors.
Second Empire
Named for their prominent French elements and at the time of the Second French Empire, this architectural style is more in the Northeast and Midwest. Popular for public buildings and state institutions, the characteristics of this style include a rectangular tower with mansard roof in the short and steep. The mansard roof crest was often lined with sheet iron, and sometimes a lightning rod. Examples include the Old Executive Building in Washington, DC, and Philadelphia City Hall.
Italiano
In mid 1800, the Italian style began appearing in homes in the Midwest, East Coast Region and San Francisco. Features inspired by Italian Renaissance Italian style houses have windows to the street, windows tall and narrow towers, chimneys and places little strange. The Garden District of New Orleans contains many examples of this style.
Stick-Eastlake
We who are found primarily in the Northeast, Stick Houses are decorative, but not too flowery. Usually include steeply pitched roofs with overhangs, shingles covering the walls exterior and roof, windows and square. Corona retailer can also be found along the edges of the roof. While some architects today still borrow ideas from these styles to create a modern Victorian house, architecture Victorian style has become more a relic of the past. In some communities find historic neighborhoods full of houses beautifully restored Victorian style. Many have become guest rooms, places of business, or simply historical sites for the public to view.
There are several communities around the country known for its beautifully restored Victorian architecture or preserved. One example is Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where the greatest diversity of architecture and the center of the United States of America. All Eureka Springs city is included in the National Register of Historic Places, mainly due in part to the preservation of its Victorian architecture.
